It lives in central Mexico, where it is threatened with extinction. It usually grows alone, developing a rounded body over many years, with a woolly crown. It rarely produces shoots. Its approximately 40 longitudinal ribs are densely covered with tubercles, on which there are 5 cm long, yellowish spines. Its flowers are yellow, brownish at the tips, slightly more than 5 cm long and located around the crown. It is not winter-hardy.
